Can I root climbing hydrangea in water?

Can I root climbing hydrangea in water? I have some branches weighted down with bricks into dirt, but several pieces broke off. Will they root in water?

I remember reading somewhere -of course I cannot remember where now- that it can be done but that it is less successful than other propagation methods. I prefer rooting cuttings and ground layering (which you were doing already). I say give it a try and post your results and recommendations.
