Hummingbirds and Impatiens ??

two_munkeys(z6 ON)September 7, 2005

I had no idea !!

For almost 20 minutes, I watched two hummers feeding off my beds of impatiens.

And here I was wondering what else I could plant (other than my honeysuckle which doesn't bloom much this time of year) to keep them coming back, as they've been hanging around quite a bit this year.

I'm finding more places to plant impatiens next year.

Depending on your conditions, there are a lot of flowers you could plant. You really should post your question and read the old posts at Hummingbird Gardening. It sounds like you have quite a bit of shade since you are growing lots of impatiens, but maybe not. The more information you provide about your yard the better the replies will be. Needless to say, we discuss dozens if not hundreds of hummingbird plants.

I have noticed Hummingbirds coming to my Impatiens balfourii. I really dont see them visiting the other Impatiens. What I do see are the Hawk Moths which act like Hummers at dusk. The moths are natural pollinators for many species of Impatiens.

I get Hummingbirds every year on the impatiens, and I also get Hummingbird moths. I can never grab the camera fast enough to catch them in action though.
