problem with impatiens

hank3443(6)October 30, 2008

I LIVE ON THE NEW JERSEY COAST AND I HAVE BEEN GROWING IMPATIENS FOR ABOUT EIGHT YEARS. I HAVE MANY OF THEM IN BORDERS AND HANGING BASKETS. THEY GROW HUGE, UP TO (3) FOOT TALL, AND LAST WELL INTO LATE OCTOBER, HOWEVER I DO HAVE A PROBLEM, EVERY SO OFTEN A PLANT WILL JUST COLLAPSE AND DIE. SOMETIMES THE WHOLE PLANT, SOMETIMES JUST PART OF THE PLANT. THE HANGING BASKETS NEVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I WOULD THINK I USE FRESH POTTING SOIL IN THEM, CHANGING THE SOIL IN THE BEDS IS NOT AN OPTION. THE PROBLEM CHANGES EVERY YEAR, THIS PAST SEASON WAS THE WORST, ITS A SHAME BECAUSE BESIDES MYSELF MANY PEOPLE ENJOY THR COLOR, I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM TO BE A FUNGUS BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO STOP IT, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE I CAN GET.

I think you are right, it does sound like a fungal problem. There are some fungicides that may help but I'm not sure that they address this problem. The one I like to use is a product by Greenlight called Fungaway.
