Oh there yah go again your one of the hate America crowd. Those were all necessary. If we hadn't mined the harbors of Nicaragua what might have happened.

The Republic of Nicaragua v. The United States of America[1] was a 1984 case of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in which the ICJ ruled in favor of Nicaragua and against the United States and awarded reparations to Nicaragua. The ICJ held that the U.S. had violated international law by supporting the Contras in their rebellion against the Nicaraguan government and by mining Nicaragua's harbors. The United States refused to participate in the proceedings after the Court rejected its argument that the ICJ lacked jurisdiction to hear the case. The U.S. later blocked enforcement of the judgment by the United Nations Security Council and thereby prevented Nicaragua from obtaining any actual compensation.[2] The Nicaraguan government finally withdrew the complaint from the court in September 1992 (under the later, post-FSLN, government of Violeta Chamorro), following a repeal of the law requiring the country to seek compensation.

What are you complaining about, Ink? Both Canada and England managed to escape interventions and meddling.

Unfortunately, Austrialia was a target country - the CIA station at Pine Gap and the fall of the Whitlam government is one example. Then there's the lurid Nugan Hand Bank tale.

So, why haven't we been mean to Canada yet?

Oil?

Weren't some Canadian citizens being unreasonable in the 1980s when Reagan's Pentagon wanted to test US Cruise missiles over Canadian territory? Had they succeeded in blocking the testing, Canada might have become a 'country of interest.'

It would be too easy to take over Canada. Our government prefers a fight to the death before claiming a victory.

Maggie,

USAID doesn't have a stellar record either.

A new audit (2011) by the US special inspector general for Afghan reconstruction says as much as $10 million a day in US aid to Afghanistan cannot be accounted for and could be making its way into terrorist hands.

The audit renewed questions about the accountability of hundreds of millions of dollars in US aid that seem to vanish on arrival in Afghanistan. The US has spent $70 billion since 2002 to improve security and promote development in Afghanistan but tracking use of the money has been hampered by the government, the audit said.

Doing the less good.

USAID is responsible for saving millions of chidrens lives around the globe going back 50 years.

Money has been going out the front door in Afghanistan and Iraq since day one when Bush/Cheney put their guys in charge. Total cluster.

What say you about moving maybe 10% of the military budget over to USAID. Not to be too cynical but there may be a sliding scale we could apply to arrive at an optimum between the expense of creating problems and fixing them.

Brush, I said since then so obviously wasn't excluding the present. This president will at least end this disaster he didn't make. The reality is he had few options.

Vaccination programs, the AIDS program, disaster relief have nothing to do with war reparations. Trust me I am not in favor of our military industrial complex. Just making another point...from another perspective.
