Is there something wrong with my ES TnS?

clyft(z5)May 21, 2010

This is my first hydrangea and it looks not quite right. It is an endless summer TnS. I purchased it late last summer. Last fall it grew, developed some buds and then they died and it went dormant. I realize I can expect some winter die-back but is it normal for it to have discolored leaf tips? I haven't fertilized it and I don't use chemicals.

Thanks in advance.

Yea it looks like it died to the ground, but that is typical for a ES across it's first winter and with no winter protection. Also the new foilage looks a little wilted or like it has got nipped a little by frost this spring. It will snap out of it and an ES is very hard to kill. Just keep it watered. Give the old stems a little longer before pruning them off. They might snap out of it but look pretty bad. What kind of sun exposure does it receive?

If the frost that affected the leaves managed to killed the buds, ES will develop new ones later on. You will still get bloomage but it may start blooming later than "usual".
