Pruning Pine over Pond

elark(z5b kck)February 11, 2007

I'm contemplating trimming some branches off of this young Black pine and train it to go out and over the pond. How old does a tree have to be before you can start shaping and taking away branches?

Hi,
I would start to thin some of those branches out and also start to wire some of them down, but if that is snow I see on the ground I would wait a while before starting.
George.

George, the link to your garden site is encouraging. I can get somewhat of an idea how you have trained your pine. Thanks
