Can I move my Irises Right Now?

redbazel(8 (I think!))March 23, 2008

I'm in Ca Central Valley and we are already in high 60's/low 70's. My iris (bearded maybe?) plants are getting full with bloom but not quite ready. Quite a few are in an area out of sun and don't do that well.......I meant to move them last Fall but forgot. If I did them right now and transplant will I lose any hope of a Spring Bloom? If it helps any, azaleas are not quite blooming yet either, but I do see some full sun irises down the street in full bloom already.

Red,

This question frequently comes up.

~~ Bearded iris are divided and moved shortly after bloom ~~
************************************************

I moved one once with a budded stalk on it and naturally the stalk went limp from transplant shock.

If this is the time of year when you have the time and inclination, go for it. I can't predict bloom loss but the more soil the better (less root disturbance).

That's what I was afraid of. And once upon a time, at an old house, I remembered to dig them all up, divide them, and replant in more sun, right after bloom. But I was hoping.........

thank you.

If you look in the FAQ's under this board, it says not to. Wait until the heat of the summer is less and before frost. I moved a bunch in September last year to a fresh bed, and based on what I have seen so far this spring, you would have thought they have been growing there for years.

I would wait. If you do move them, you risk losing a season of blooms or even the entire rhizome.
