Iris rhizomes below surface

Carolinaflowerlover NC Zone 7bMarch 23, 2013

I forgot and mulched the irises last fall. Whoops! I am going to uncover them next week. I think the rhizomes will be below the surface now....should I go ahead and pull them back to the top, or do it another time of year? They do have lots of green leaves, at least. We are having below-normal temps on the 40s, so I wasn't sure if I should disturb them now.

i would suggest.. that you NEVER do anything.. on most spring plants.. until after flower ...

and with iris.. after flower.. you can dig them up.. and move them around.. when its time to cut back the foliage ...

i never worry about burying them in MULCH ... as compared to a compost.. one is topical to the soil.. and one is layering of the soil .. but of course.. it might depend on your soil type..

in my sand.. they are NEVER too wet.. to lead to rot ...

Thanks! They do not seem too wet, thankfully.
