Anybody Else Feel a Little Bit Tipsy This Time of Year?

sylviatexas1April 13, 2010

I swear, I think I'm drunk on iris...

The other day, I was between appointments, not enough time to actually get anything done, so I drove around the old part of this old city, looking at irises.

ended up knocking on 2 doors & trading some of my iris albicans & an Autumn Joy sedum for some of the old fragrant bi-tone purple & a tall old yellow iris.

The irises are so beautiful right now (iris albicans has just finished & William A Setchell, Gudrun, a couple of plicatas, & florentina have taken over) that I could stroll around looking at everyone's flower gardens all day at least 4 days a week, a smile on my face & no fear of strangers-

as long as they have a nice flower garden.

I can read the joy in your post. Good for you, knocking on doors!

I'm with you- I could look at gardens full of irises all day. Mikey is taking me to Oregon in early May to Schreiner's, Cooley's, and MidAmerican Gardens. I should probably start tearing out lawn now...

I'd say I'm tipsy, but that's probably just from the beer. Irises haven't bloomed yet here.

I was in Oregon this past weekend and saw a few blooming. I got over excited and my friend had to pull me away. And we just happened to pass by Cooley's, and I rolled down my window to yell, "I love your irises!" Not that there was anyone to hear it, but it seemed like a good idea. And I apparently passed Schreiner's and another one on I-5, but I wasn't paying attention. But I'm going back out sometime in May to actually visit the gardens.

I'll see you there. I think we'll be there the second weekend Schreiner's is open- May 14-15. Bring your checkbook.

Tipsey and tired here. My order of Siberian Iris arrived yesterday from Joe Pye Weed's Garden. I planted 6 iris last night, finishing up in the dark. DW continues to wonder about me. Three more to go tonight.

The iris sent by Joe Pye Weed's Garden were not as small as some here led me to believe. The foliage was clipped but the roots were about 6". Pretty much comparable to the potted SI I have bought at local nurseries. The overall condition/packing of the plants was excellent. The free gift plant they included was one of their new (expensive) varieties.

I am very pleased with this supplier.
