These are blooming now
It's not a Louisiana. Maybe a pseudocorus?
Spurias also look like this but I think it's too early for them.
How tall is it?
They are about 3-4' tall. I always thought they were Louisiana Iris. How do you tell the difference?
Mainly it is the form. The 3 lower petals (falls) turn downwards abruptly after the style arms flare upwards. The 3 petals (standards) in between are insignificant and short.
This photo of a 1950 Louisiana before a lot of hybridizing shows the difference in form. Notice how the 3 standards are a prominent part of the flower. The signal just below the style arm on this iris is not sharply defined as it is on most Louisianas. Yours has what looks like a typical psuedocorus marking, tho faint, partially visible.
The link shows the form of newer ones. Fuller petals, bigger standards, shorter style arms and yellow signals on most.
Do you see the differences?
Here is a link that might be useful: http://zydecoirises.com/IndexPage/CatalogA-C.htm
I think I see the difference. This is very interesting. thank you.
I'm going to get out from behind this computer and go take a closer look at mine.
btw, I got mine from my Dad in Baton Rouge LA. I'm now in Bay St. Louis MS.
There is a ditch down the road that is loaded with them. They look the same as mine, at least I thought they did before I knew what to look for. They are both about the same size and yellow. I'm going to compare them and see what those are.
