Iris Fan question

motomomMay 17, 2010

I have been growing Iris for a few years and over the years have added different colors just to see them bloom. I don't keep up with names or any of that. A few days ago I got a mess of fans from an older lady that told me something about them and I was curious whether it was true or not.She said that if you look at the back of a fan at the bottom of the stem if it has a purple color to it it's most likely going to be a two-tone color. Does anyone know if this is true? I checked mine and I have alot with this color on them. Because most of them I bought last year they didn't bloom this year so I haven't even seen the bloom colors.

I have selfs (solid) with purple base foliage too.

Laurie at Shadowwood has a list. It shows up on my browser on the lower right of the screen.

I have several selfs with pp foliage too. I thought for a while that purple foliage might mean purple or blue blooms, but Harvest of Memories has very purple base foliage.

I've never looked at the back of a fan at the bottom, only looked at the front of the base.

I do know that Wabash and Bright Hour are both 2 tone and the way to distinguish between the two is that Wabash has a purple tinge at the base of the fans, most visible in the spring.
