Grits vs Cornmeal?

As I recall, my mother made hominy by boiling corn in a lye solution. So I suppose that would alter at least some of the chemistry and, for sure, any fungal content of the corn. In my mind, that would create serious doubt as to whether corn and hominy would give the same results.
