Pink Wild Flowers on Hwy 90 in Louisiana

sungrasses(Z9, Central FL)April 12, 2005

Can anyone tell me what those beautiful pink wild flowers are that are growing in abundance along Hwy 90 between New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana? They sorta look like a poppy, but I'm not sure. I also saw them growing wild along the roads in Lafayette. If anyone knows what they are and has some seeds, I would love to get some.

Thanks for the help.

They're probably Missiouri Primrose (aka Mexican primrose, oneotherea speciosa), and no, you don't want seeds. They are horribly invasive and impossible to eradicate in any garden situation.

They really are very pretty, and also extremely invasive. Wouldn't be surprised if they're on the noxious weed list. But I love looking at them along the roadside!

how a weed in one area is someone's garden in another?

I've seen these flowers along roadsides my whole life, and when I went to visit my hub's family in New Mex, they had 'em growing in flower boxes downtown.

I about died laughing.

They are Missouri primrose (oneotherea). They are invasive but pull up easily. They grow anywhere which is nice. I always have several volunteers in my garden this time of year from the empty lot next door.
