This is an old fashioned iris, or so I am told. The ones sold before all the new cultivars with the fancy new colours?

I'm wondering if a)that is true and b)if it has a name, what it is?

I am including 2 photos below. One is taken in a sunnier location, the other in a slightly shadier location.

Thank you!

I wonder if this could be The Red Douglas, Dykes Medal'41.

Easy one. Indian Chief. The netted standards with the wire rim of deeper color give it away. Plus it is everywhere. Probably the hardiest iris in existence.

Here is a link that might be useful: Indian Chief

It does seem to be very hardy. It does not multiply very quickly at all though. Very slow multiplier.
Indian Chief is from 1929, so I guess that fits as an "older variety, right? Would this one be considered a historic variety then?

Mike (garden_of_mu) really knows the historics. Good to see you back on the forum!

Yes, it is a historic.

Technically, any iris more than 30 years old is officially considered an historic. Personally I consider any pre-1965 be in that class. After that we get more modern forms and styles. IC is a classic, and well regarded.

Nice to be back. A little free time allows me the luxury to post! =)
