Love Bugs?

sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida 9a)September 19, 2005

Now is the time of the season I guess lol. They are everywhere and on everything! They really seem to like my brugmansia and I have observed them licking/tasting them. Now I don't think they are actually eating them because there are no holes in the leaves, so what are they doing?

Anyone know what love bugs really eat?

I hope someone who knows what they're talking about will pick this up, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that they mostly don't eat while they're being 'love bugs' but just concentrate on 'perpetuating the species'. Then when the eggs hatch I think they eat other bugs. I think I read that---! Good guys in other words, even if they do kinda smell bad and mess up the car.

I am glad to hear that greenelbows. I can handle a little 'mess' in exchange for insect population control lol. I also saw an assassin bug eating love bugs on my brugs today. I think the assassin bugs are kinda like praying mantis in their eating habits- they eat everything

i think that's true of quite a few of the bugs we like to encourage. Just wish I could remember where I read that about love bugs. As I was typing this, I just remembered there's an Insect forum on GW. Maybe I'll check over there. Or maybe I'll go to bed!

The adult love bugs will feed on nectar, pollen, fruit, and will drink water. If you cut an orange open and leave it for awhile, they will find it!

The adults lay their eggs in soft, moist grass...and especially like the habitat along well traveled roadsides. They are very attracted to exhaust fumes and the heat of cars and trucks!

Love bugs and their cousins, which breed on goldenrain trees, don't harm plants. They just clog up your radiator and gunk up your windshield. LOL

What are love bugs? May sound slow but are they dangerous to humans? Like getting in your skin, sucking your blood, laying eggs on or inside of you (idk what they are) is there a lot in louisianna houma?
