Big Ole ButterBeans

mrtoad(7b NC)March 4, 2011

in the 50"s i loved to go to my grandmother's for "supper" - she cooked the best butterbeans - big ones - multi colored as i remember - where do i began to look to find these beans - i have "christmas limas" but in my memory there were more colors - maybe she cooked more than one verity

and I am sure she used "fat back"

thanks for any help you can give me

Could it be speckled butter beans? They have more color before cooking than Christmas limas, but not as big.

There are quite a few heirloom limas that are multi-colored, or have a mix of colors. "Rev. Taylor's" has various combinations of red, white, and black. The "Lynch Butterbean" is similar, based upon its description. The Hopi limas have a wide range of colors, but they are probably not the limas you are looking for.

You can find seed for the "Lynch" butterbean at the site below.
