Foliar feeding?

julieann_growMarch 18, 2007

Weekly I spray my veggie garden with a foliar spray (fish/seaweed). Would my pole and bush beans benefit from this or is it a waste?

For a long time I wondered if foliar feeding actually works. A while back I decided to satisfy my curiosity by performing an experiment which I could observe with my own eyes. The thread where I reported on the experiment in real time is linked below.

The bottom line:

1. Plants can absorb some nutrients through their leaves and distribute the nutrients throughout the plant. This seems to be very minimal compared to root feeding.

2. Foliar feeding in a practical (not experimental) setting almost always results in coincidental root feeding. You really have to try if you want to feed the foliage without feeding the roots.
