What's in a Name? or a bag...

Ok - I want to plant a LOT of good quality pole beans. It irks me that it costs $2.49 for a dinky 1 oz Burpee package at Home Despot, and 69c for a pound of beans at Food Lion. Or even if I bought the "gourmet" beans at Whole Foods, it would be cheaper than buying "seed" beans.

Has anyone experimented with growing beans from the "supermarket"? Do they "map" to known varieties?

Yes, you will get known varieties from supermarket dried beans. Probably none will be pole beans however and they ordinarily will not be the best varieties for snap beans although they can be used as such. Pole beans are seldom grown commercially except for seed because they cannot be mechanically harvested.

I'm thinking of growing cranberry beans as horticultural beans (fresh shelling) as they seem to be a good type for this purpose from what I have read.

I'm not totally certain, but I think I found some pinto beans sprouting in my compost pile a few days ago.
About a week ago I threw a pile on top of my compost pile.

We had soaked them too long(about 2 days straight) and thought they would be too mushy if we cooked them.

I wonder what kind of plant they would have grew in to?
