Can I cut back my irises now?

glenelenJuly 5, 2009

OK, it's July 5, and my irises have been gone for about 10 days. I have dead-headed them, and I would like to cut back the droopy foliage if it will not harm them. I would leave about 8 inches of foliage. Is this okay to do? Thanks for your help.

A search on cutting foliage will turn up lots of differing practices on this subject.

I don't cut back foliage on my beardeds. I remove the outer leaves as they turn brown.

Leave any healthy green foliage and cut back the outside leaves that are turning brown and dying back. Don't worry if it is floppy - just stick with healthy green leaves and take out browning or yellowing ones. Take out any spent bloom stalks as long as there are new fans going for next years bloom.
