Insuk's Wang Kong - Shade question

christie_sw_mo(Z6)May 6, 2011

Trying to decide where to plant my runner beans. I have a chain link fence around my back yard but I'm afraid my dogs might eat them if I plant them on that fence.

If I plant them along the east side of my deck. The lower portion of the vines (about three feet) would be in almost complete shade at the bottom, and then the tops would be in almost full sun. Do you think that would work? I'm in southwest Missouri and we'll have lots of days in the mid to upper nineties during the summer and probably a few over 100.

I'd read that they like afternoon shade but I'm wondering if I plant them there if they'll ever grow tall enough to reach the sun. Would too much shade keep them from growing? Maybe I should risk my dogs ruining them and just plant them along the chain link fence.
