Siberian vs Japanese vs Louisiana irises

Barry203August 16, 2012

I have inherited some beardless irises in a community garden. Is there a way to distinguish between the 3 types from the leaves or growth habit? The plants bloom a few weeks after bearded irises. The blooms are 4-5" in diameter and did not hold up well as cut flowers. Unfortunately I do not have a photo of the blooms but they seem similar (to an neophyte's eye) to photos of all 3 types I found on the web.

Yes, it's fairly simple :)
1) look at the leaves
Is there a definite midrib and the leaves are less than 1" wide ? - Japanese
Is the width mostly less than 3/4" and around 1/2" and smooth - Siberian
Are the leaves more of a yellowish green than blue green and tend to be wider >1" - Lousiana

2) look at the Rhizomes
Are they at least 1" wide, long and yellow with brown ribs - Lousiana
