soy just germinating being eaten by slugs

lolear(5b - Chicago)June 1, 2010

I have sown gardensoy in my raised bed (one 8ft row). Yesterday I noticed some of the seeds had started to come up so I took a closer look. It had just rained heavily and the ground was still wet. On the newly germinating soy I found many tiny slugs!! Imagine my disgust! I picked off what I could see, made cornmeal rings around each one and set a beer baited trap. I'm wondering how the additional seeds, not yet up, are faring. Do slugs eat seeds? Anything else I can do to stop them? Or just wait for dryer weather and reseed?

I've had good luck with a product called Sluggo. It's one of the safe slug poisons that won't harm pets or wildlife. There are other safe brands, too, but be sure to read the label and avoid the ones that harm other creatures.

Agree with the Sluggo (iron phosphate, I believe) suggestion. Also, I started slug hunting last year with a bottle of diluted (with water) ammonia. It's immediate and gratifying (to me, that is) for the slugs I catch in the act.
