chickpeas and/or BEPs

drsarahcJuly 23, 2012

Hi all, I'm new here! We have a smallish backyard garden and would like to attempt chickpeas and/or black-eyed peas. Anybody in my zone got a recommendation for particular plants? We could handle either bushes or climbers. Also, what time of year should we plant? The weather has been so unusual this year that we're kinda baffled.

Cheers,

Sarah

Two totally different plants. Blackeye peas, California # 5 is the dominant variety for home gardeners) are hot weather plants which will tolerate triple digit temps. In Georgia they can planted from May til early July.
Chickpeas are a cool season crop that likes dry weather. They don't do well in wet soil. They don't like temps over 80 degrees F OR night temps below 60. Most Chickpeas in The USA are grown in California so somewhere in the state has ideal conditions.
