lilies grown in crates/overwintering

This year I tried growing lilies in crates for cutting and was very happy with the results.

My question regards overwintering them. Do I have to plant them all out in the ground for them to survive, or can I place the whole crate, as is, in my unheated garage?

I have successfully overwintered potted lilies many times in the garage. Would I have as much success with the crates?

What would the difference between a crate and pot be? More or less soil or what?
I have never done neither, so can't give you any advise, I put all my pots in the ground for winter.

Crates are much more open than pots - the sides and bottom are open. There are also more bulbs in them than in the pots I have, so less soil around each bulb.
