Use of dormant oil?

rouge21_gw(5)January 13, 2013

I am new to most things JM but in my 'research' I have come across references to using dormant oil in the spring and fall.

I have sprayed fruit trees with such but I had not considered doing similarly with maples. How widespread is this practice?

Is there a particular pest you need to control?

I have never sprayed my JMs as I never saw a need.

Dormant oil is used to control overwintering insects and their eggs. If no insect problems with the trees, no need to spray!

Like tj, I have never had need to spray any of my JM's. And FWIW, spraying the trees when in leaf for whatever reason is usually discouraged. JM's tend to have rather delicate, sensitive foliage that will react phytotoxically with just about anything sprayed on them other than water.
