Pruning native red maples

dghays(Z10A FL Brevard)January 15, 2008

I have a dozen or so native red maples in peninsular Florida, they are from 8 or 10' to just over 20' tall. I am seeing lots of narrow crotches including some which 'Y' and ends up being two leaders. It seems like it would be a lot of pruning to remove all narrow crotches, should I?

These often branch that way. Might be a bit late in their lives to mess with them much now. Major structural changes are best accomplished before there is much of a tree present - prevention rather than cure. If you could put up some pictures it might be possible to discuss specific cuts (if any) that seem like they could be worthwhile.
