What variety of peas for zone 9

garden_fool(zone 9 TX)October 26, 2007

I am going over seed catalogue's for next spring. I need to know if anyone has had success growing peas in zone 9. I planted some sugar snap yesterday but I did not have any luck with them in the spring. thanks for the information

I am asumming that you mean English peas rather than Southern peas which grow well throughout the south. I can grow early maturing cultivars in the early spring. Smooth seeded cultivars like Willet Wonder, planted the first of December, wrinkled seeded cultivars like Dakota planted the first of February. I suspect you would have to grow them in the winter, probably planting in October or November. Check with your county agent, they are supposed to know what works in your county.

In CA zone 9, I plant them mid Oct > Feb and harvest till April (they are rotated in crops as other ones end for they year, I toss in fresh compost and peas for a quick crop).
