Young maples declining post-shipping (southern hemisphere)

Celastra(10a)February 16, 2013

Hi, new to the forums!

I'm a young gardener in the southern hemisphere, just recently fallen in love with maples. A week ago I received six maples in the mail (2x ea of: sugar, silver, and red), they took 5 days to get here(!) and the supplier wrapped [sealed] them in black plastic! Inevitably they arrived in shocking condition, I immediately potted them up (sent bare-root) and put them in a cool shaded area with a light morning misting. A week on they've all declined bar one silver maple. This is incredibly devastating for me as I spent a good portion of my savings on these (I'm a student). I realise now they should have been shipped during fall/dormancy, alas all I can do now is deal with the situation.

So, what do my/their prospects look like?

I'd REALLY appreciate some help!

About all you have going for you is it's nearly fall for you.
Don't over compensate by overwatering and wait.

P.S. Not sure why the plant in the last pic is hacked off like that.
Were these from a reputable nursery?

Thanks for the info all! Hoping like crazy they will pull through!

@tsugajunkie: they are getting watered once a week now, I'll wait until my other maples drop their leaves to tell if these have managed to enter dormancy OK. And just realised that last pic was a bad pic, I staked them (carefully) with fresh willow branches which is what you see, the maple stem is behind the willow.

Any more advice would be much appreciated!
