what tree is this?
OK, I didn't snap a pic...but there is a row of trees in a median in Columbia, MD...they are cherry-like in appearance overall. The leaves start out green, then the trees bloom (right about now), then after bloom, the leaves turn purple-red.
The blooms are more like a North American cherry, like a P. serotina (wild black cherry) or P. virginiana (chokecherry) than a Japanese or even a fruiting cherry would be, since they appear after the leaves start to unfold, and are on a penducle with many flowers, rather than clustered on spurs.
Then, right after bloom, the leaves turn purple and stay that way for the rest of the season.
Any idea what these might be?
