Favorite garlic for this area?

Larry Kahn(7b)January 22, 2010

I've been growing Music for a couple of years and it's great, but never stores as well as I'd like. Since it's a hardneck maybe there's not much to do since those don't store as well as softnecks.

Any recommendations? We go for stronger flavor rather than mild.

Hi Larry,

I am growing an Italian Red garlic which is a softneck as well as grey shallots. The garlic is a very early maturing variety and keeps well for 6 months. The size has been fairly small, but the flavor is great. This year I planted only the largest cloves - it's the 3rd year for these- and I hope to get mostly larger heads. I tried preserving the garlic that remained after 6 months sliced in oil in the fridge and it is very handy to have ready to go into recipes. I love the shallots, too, but they are very small and are hard to use. I could give you some of each to try next year in exchange for some Musics.

I won't have Musics until after I harvest them in summer. But we could swap then. Biggest disadvantage to Musics is you only get 4 or 5 large cloves per bulb.

I have had great luck with the hardnecks like German garlic, also the Chinese and Hungarian types.

Any thoughts on which hardnecks make good garlic scapes in this area? Also, should I plant garlic this spring, or wait until fall?
