Davidsans video ~ Which JM is this? Also, thoughts on Kashima.

magpiepixJune 11, 2014

Hello there,

First I want to thank you all for being such a great source of information. I've been checking this site and this forum for a long time now, learning about gardening and Japanese maples.

I have a spot in our garden, and I'm thinking about getting a Kashima JM. I have two questions.

1. In this Davidsans video, at 3:11, anyone want to guess which JM this is? It may be the same one at 4:04. I've mailed Davdisans, but I suspect this is his busiest season and I don't want to be a pest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRT-1VDZ2cw#t=198

I love the lime-yellow foliage, and I'm looking for a dwarf of that shape.

2. On Davidsans' website, he mentions that Kashima/Chiba is often confused with Kamagata, and that many sellers and nurseries are selling Kamagatas labelled as Kashima/Chiba. Does anyone have thoughts on this? http://www.davidsansjapanesemaples.com/shop/product/kashima

Thanks very much.

Not a close enough look to determine......and even then it's only speculation. Most experts have a hard time differentiating between many of the JM's as differences can be very subtle. On the other hand, I would have a hard time mixing up Kamagata and Kashima - the foliage size and shape is not at all similar. Of the two, 'Kamagata' would be my first choice.
