Young Silver Maple issue

vadxx001June 19, 2013

We recently purchased a house and the previous owners planted this maple in memory of a loved one. We feel as though we should attempt to nurse it back to health attached are some photos of the tree. Please offer any thgoughts to the issue and possible remedies. Thank you in advance for your time.

Just a thought, but I'm not sure I'd bother. Silvers aren't the best tree for a location so close to the house. They are messy and break up easily. They droop a lot, require constant pruning once mature to keep them limbed up, and their surface roots will ruin your lawn.

Don't get me wrong, they're not BAD trees if placed properly (I have 3 of them), but that one is not placed properly.

If you want a maple there, I would go with one of the sugar maple variants. Better fall color, more compact form, less trouble with surface roots.

Just my opinion. I have a legacy sugar maple that would fit great in that spot.

I don't think you have a Silver maple there. Looks more like a Norway type to me, possibly a Sugar, but not a Silver. It doesn't look worth saving to me.

OK, two votes for getting rid off. Sounds like a plan and being a novice at this I was guessing a silver. Thanks for your input. Any other thoughts are gladly accepted.
