Maple Tree Needs Your Help!

NeedHelpInPaJuly 24, 2012

hello,

I just purchased a new home in Southeastern PA that has a sick looking Maple tree out front. The tree is likely to be about 20 years old

1. The tree has lots of dead growth at the top of tree.

2. There are not many leaves and some are brown.

3. The trunk near the base has 20-30 tiny round holes. Some sort of borer from what I've read online.

4. In this same area as the holes, the bark is brittle and crumbling off.

I just put down some organic mulch and will start watering, we've had a dry spell for a few months.

Any suggestions on what is causing the growth issues??? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry - I think the borers at this point are a nonissue. It's a hazard tree and should be taken down before it topples in a storm. Roots on the side the photo was taken from are dead and rotting, so structural failure is inevitable.

I agree with with AL at the above post. If i thought that tree could reach my house if blown over, it would have an appointment with a pro tree crew for removal. The storms the last few weeks around here have created lots of damage from downed trees. Its so not worth the risk with a compromised tree.

thanks for the responses. This tree is definitely within striking distance of my house. The appointment with a tree service for a removal was just made!!

It's dead, it just doesn't know it yet.

At this point, what few leaves it has this year are just the beginning, I bet it won't leaf out at all next year.

Get rid of it before it falls on your house, car, or neighbor!
