Japanese Maple's trunk diameter

sacgardenJuly 6, 2011

I would like to plant an Emperor 1 or Sango-Kaku behind my pool in the very corner of the yard as a focal point behind a waterfall. I was hoping you could tell me approximately what the trunk circumferance would be when they are full grown to be sure it has adequate room. Also are the roots invasive? Will they be aggressive and ruin pool pipes? Thank you so much!! PS, we are in the Sacramento Valley, so it gets pretty darn toasty out here! The tree will be in FULL SUN all day.

If the pool is a swimming pool or otherwise has some kind of intake in operation the leaves of these trees may be just about the right size to get sucked in. In such situations you want to have plants with large parts only, see the swimming pool planting list in the plant selection portion of the Sunset Western Garden Book.
