Periodic cicadas emerging this year...

jadie88(7 MD)April 13, 2013

I was moving a few perinneals a to new spots in the garden today, and with all that digging I came across three huge cicada nymphs. My kids were very impressed by the big juicy fellas, so we did some googling to show them the cicada life cycle, and we learned that this year will be a once-in-13-year event: the emergence of millions of periodic cicadas after spending more than a decade underground. Check out the link...pretty interesting stuff!

Just like the high school prom: thirteen years in school and two weeks to find a date.

According to the link, this should be a 17-year brood. I suspect it won't be nearly as big as '04.
