Pollinators for Bartlett pears?

janiebird(7)April 5, 2008

I am considering buying a dwarf Bartlett pear tree but it needs another pear variety for a pollinator. Does anyone know which pear varieties perform best in Frederick County area, Maryland? I love anjou and comice pears...do they grow well here?

Janie, I can't answer your question with any authority but there is a fruit & orchard forum here at gardenweb. There are several knowledgable pear growers from this area who post there.

I grow Asian pears and they've done very well here. I would guess that European pears would do well also.

Good luck.

Are you sure they need a pollenizor (a pollinator is the insect that moves the pollen)? I thought all pears were self-fertile.

Thanks for teaching me the correct term Annebert. Wow...I thought the Bartlett tag said it needed a Pollenizor. I'll double check. Thanks!

Bartlett pears are self-pollinating but a pollinator will help the tree bare better fruit. Bees help in pollination.
