Excess leaves

cailleachmn(3)April 7, 2006

Hey all. I have to admit that we did a subpar job getting all the leaves out of our yard before winter fell. I'm repairing that error now - but I wondered what you all did with your leaves and stuff once they were up? Mine are in a plastic garbage bag now. I don't have any sort of facility for composting or anything, but I feel bad just throwing them away, and I know if I dump them in the woods behind the house, they'll just blow back (on top of my daylily garden, no less!).

Any advice?

I suppose making a compost enclosure would be the best way to go, and you could use it for years to come. Something simple, like a few fence posts with wire around them. You would need a gate where you can turn it once in a while and harvest when it is finished. You can find suggestions for very basic designs free on the web. Carmellia

Mine get mulched in the mower and used as topdressing in the garden.

Oooh, mulching is a great idea! I'll have to look into that, since the yard isn't really mine (it's my mother's) and I can't build anything on it.
