Can I grow Sugar Maples in the Northwest?

ryanfreshAugust 27, 2008

Hi, I am wondering if I plant Sugar Maples in my yard near Seattle, will they grow and be fine? It's excellent soil and with good sunlight, but outside of their natural range so I wanted to be sure before I bought the trees (they are 3-4 feet high for $10 for two of them).

Thanks!

For the best Northwest display of brilliant orange among the large-growing species, there is no rival to the eastern American sugar maple (Acer saccharum). Seattle's dry summers and sterile gravelly soils are perfect for stressing this species, thereby, as it were, inflaming its passion and causing it to blush sooner and redder. Seattle's largest sugar maple, 90 feet tall and 72 feet wide, is a street-tree on Capitol Hill, on 17th Avenue East, just south of East Roy Street

Seems like the closely related Acer grandidentatum (bigtooth maple) AKA Acer saccharum ssp. grandidentatum would be better, seing as how it is acclimated better to dry summers and is native to the American west.

>Seems like the closely related Acer grandidentatum (bigtooth maple) AKA Acer saccharum ssp. grandidentatum would be better"Only four are known in Seattle. The autumn color is yellow...The clone Rocky Mountain Glow (= 'Schmidt') has red fall color, and may exist as a young street-tree here"
