Growing grass question

posieh(3)April 13, 2013

I'm wondering if I plant a zone 9-10 perennial grass here in my zone if it will grow and produce colorful heads by Fall. I've never tried it and would hate to waste the money on seed if there were no hope of getting seed heads for Winter bouquets. I wonder about zone 5 Pampas grass also. Will it produce seed heads the first year?

I'd say do not waste your money.

I'm assuming you're talking about something like a Pampas grass.

Remember, in zones 9-10, they have a much longer growing season than we do, so, their perennial grassees might start coming up in March.

Being that our spring is so delayed this year, I'd say you have a slim chance of the grasses being able to have time to develop the lovely seed heads.

I'd stick with something hardy here.... Try Miscanthus Silverfeather
