Dark leafed maple

orcadragonSeptember 20, 2007

I have a maple tree in my backyard that is a dark purplish all year. Growing up we called it the Black maple, but I have looked at pictures of Black maples and seen green leaves. Then I thought maybe it is called a Cherry maple, but a quick web search proved that wrong. I thought then is it a Red maple, but those appear to only be red with new growth and fall. So what maple tree is dark purple all year long? Please help me.

'Crimson King', a cultivar of Norway maple, Acer platanoides, has very dark, purple-red foliage throughout the season, becoming a brighter red in fall. But it doesn't hold its leaves all year.

But perhaps that's what you meant? Holds the dark color all season till they drop?
