Hows markets going this year

Tom1953(5)September 4, 2004

How are markets going for everyone this year.

We went from 5 sellers to 15.

This weekend we did a lot of business and sold out.

We are selling tickets for a basket of produce with some gift certiicates from some of the business in the area.

What else have you done to raise funds?

We belong to a nice market that's received good publicity this year. The number of customers is growing and the amount of vegetables vendors are offering is keeping up with customers. It's been a good year in spite of the lousy weather.

We don't fund raise so I'm no help with that.

we have about 25 vendors signed up for our market. It is in its' first year and has been doing very well. we have been getting around 500 customers through Saturday mornings.

We raise funds by having a friend of the market program. Pay $30 or so and get a nice market bag with the FM logo on it and some coupons for various vendors. most people do not use the coupons.

For next year we will be increasing vendor fees ($20 for a whole season this year, too cheap) and probably put the "friends" into a tier sytem so people can give varying amounts. We have a person on our market council who knows how to do not for profit and she made the market into one which makes it easier to raise funds and get grants.

The Cape Breton Farmer's Market is in Sydney Nova Scotia. We are doing quite well as we've become full year instead of just 6 months and we have a permanent location for the 20 to 40 vendors each week. We expect the market to increase in size over the next coming years as we won't be closing or moving locations any more. We're getting some snazzy graphic design work done too to advertise the market.
