Large black wasp, blue-ish wings

weddingdance(z7 MD)August 1, 2007

Hi All,

I just wanted to confirm with someone that the large black wasp with blue wings that favors oregano flowers and is about 2" long is a friend, not a foe? I thought I read that they paralyze and kill crickets and tomatoe hornworms. Wish they'd take care of the grasshoppers and squash bugs too...

Thanks,

weddingdance

Try to take a pic and upload to Photobucket or another free site. Thanks!

I have seen very large cicada wasps, but this seems different.

I've had those very large blue-black wasps around for a couple of years now. And yes, they do seem to be completely non-aggressive and I've read the same. If you can manage to not fear them, they are actually quite pretty.

I think it's an organ pipe mud dauber.

I'm not sure about the USA, but I have just the other day, seen these wasps for the 1st time. They may be aussie natives.

These predominately Non-aggressive Black Wasps with Iridescent Blue Wings, are called: Black Flower Wasps!

Here is a link from Aussie. CSIRO is Aussie main big science info place.

I hope this may be helpful. If not in your case, it increases your knowledge of wasps & other countries!
