Rhubarb on Eastern Shore of MD?

LStanton311August 15, 2012

We've just purchased acreage on MD's Eastern Shore, planning on moving there in a few years. Starting to plan house, barns & garden (taking advantage of the time I have!) & curious if I'll be able to grow rhubarb there. Anyone there tried it? It thrives here in N. Central MD, just now sure if it's too hot there. Thanks!

It will be difficult if not impossible. Just not cold enough. I nurse a patch along in southern Maryland (on the western shore), but it's planted in a low-lying frost pocket. I've talked to other gardeners and farmers in Calvert, St. Mary's and Charles and their experience is the same -- you might be able to grow a bit of it in a cold spot. Makes me crazy as I grew up in northern Minnesota where the stuff is unkillable and grows like a hedge.
