Sunflower deer damage/will they flower?

mamam1June 28, 2007

My giant sunflowers were 18-24" high and climbing. Last night deer nipped every one of the tops off, but only the tops. There's still 18+ inches of the plants left. I hadn't noticed any buds, only leaves. Dumb question, but will they flower, or will they just grow leafy stalks now. If that's the case, I'll just pull them. So much for my mailbox garden!

Give 'em a bit, they might grow side stems and you'll have more but somewhat smaller flowers. I doubt they'll re-grow a single, central stalk.
