Recommendations for native plant hedge

shadysite(8)September 3, 2012

I work with a parish garden and we want to screen the compost containers from view. Need recommendations for 4 to 5 foot tall native plant hedge shrubs, easy care and easily controlled, shade to light shade, flowers and/or high attractiveness factor for birds and pollinators, no thorns or pirickers.

Please send recommendations!

thanks, lisa

Viburnums, red twig dogwood, blue berries, winterberry. Depending on the quality of soil, water, light, they may need to be cut back sometimes. But these are good for birds and pretty winter and summer.

I'd recommend summersweet clethra. It comes in white or pink, grows to about 5 or 6 feet and has fragrant flowers from about mid July to mid August. This plant has a very clean appearance even without pruning
