Balloon Flower Question

VMWOOD(z5IA)February 20, 2005

Last fall I had 2 potted Blue Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) seedlings that became bug infested. I set them outside and after several hard frosts I brought them into the greenhouse. One of the 2 came back up and is now blooming. You can view at the link shown below.

My question is if I set this plant outside before the winter is over can I cause it to go dormant, then plant it in the flower bed this spring and get it to bloom again this summer?

I guess my question is, why didn't you plant them outside last Fall? These are perennial plants so would have done much better with their natural dormancy.

Personally, I wouldn't put them outside now until there is no chance of frost.

These were 2 of many balloon flower seedlings I had started from seed and I did plant the rest of them outside last fall. Since these 2 were infested I just set them aside and after several frosts I thought on a whim that I would bring them inside and see what happened.

Didn't really think they would survive and 1 didn't.
