Mailbox plantings

stacyp9(5 Chicago)February 6, 2005

My mailbox is on the road and I would like some ideas for plants that can deal with the road salt. I am particularly interesting in plants that will stay neat looking, ie: more formal then cottage. I don't care for grasses in the front of the house either.

There was an article written in a garden magazine in the last year on salt tolerant plants. Including those for the "hell strip" between the road and sidewalk. Can't recall one!
Do a search on salt tol. plants, ok?

Several of my neighbors have planted daylilies around their mailboxes and they seem to be thriving even tho our salt trucks come often each winter.. It takes a lot to kill a daylily and they make great foliage in the summer along with pleasant flowers...of course, nothing in the winter..
