identification of plant

Wendy1955(3B)January 16, 2013

I would love to know what this plant is. Popped up in our garden (zone 3B)and I can only guess that it is a wild flower. The red is a somewhat fleshy friut, but not squishy. Height is less than 1/3 of a metre and it appears to be a perennial as it came up again last summer. The fleshy fruit appeared in late July.

Chenopodium capitatum, sometimes called strawberry blight because of the appearance of the fruit. It's a native and is not very common in my area.

I believe that strawberry spinach (another common name) is an annual. It has probably self-seeded itself as opposed to coming back with the same plant.

I've never seen it as a wild plant but this plant is available as an edible green (check out veggie seed vendors) and perhaps how that is where the original seeds (maybe even bird planted!) came from.
