Rice Creek Nursery closing! Last Chance tour?

julie_mn(z4 MN Henn)August 22, 2006

I am very sad to see the beautiful property with all of it's established plants about to be distroyed by a road!

I am hoping to go out there this Saturday (they are only open Fridays and Saturdays now) and take one last look around at this great nursery site-

I thought it would be fun to get a bunch of us together and tour this lovely site together- It has many beautiful gardens to see- a rich history with a love story, many daylilies and peonies have been developed here- hosta and alpine plants, conifers and woolands plants as well, and from what I hear- most if not all of their plants are 1/2 price-

Any one else free to tour on Saturday?

Oh- check out their website for more details about the nursery-

I passed by there the other day and was going to stop in but didn't. Count me in depending on the time.

The last time I visited Rice Creek a few weeks ago, which I now know was really the last time, I cried a little just thinking about the place being gone for good. It seems like so many specialist nurseries are either being driven out of business or else there is no one to take over when the owners retire (like the North Star daylily farm which I really miss.) I wish I could go this weekend. Take photos!

I am not sure when they will open- but mornings are cooler....
I am planning to spend a big chunk of the day just to see and remember. I may even pack a pic-nic...
I know I always wish I had brought water when I go there!
When are folks available to meet?
I will bring my camera for photos- and maybe I will have to learn how to post photos.

Early, please, EARLY! I will be there at 9 whether anyone comes or not. Hours are 9-5 Friday and Saturday. If interested in peonies, go to this link:

I would love to meet you folks, but have to work until 1pm. So if anyone goes later on, let me know....

I went there last month and got some beautiful daylilies. It would be super if they have some good sale prices!

I will be there if I can still move. I just spent 4 hours at the Body World show at the science museum and I can barely move. Spent too much time on my feet. I am going to go back it is amazing.

Shed a tear or two for me while you are bidding a fond farewell to a wonderful nursery. And while you are at it, buy every last rock garden plant they have and mail them to me!

Seriously.... a sad situation. I don't get there very often...but will certainly miss them.

As you can see by the date, Jules, I missed the post. Actually Kate told me about it. Sounds like a great opportunity, sorry I missed it,

I am so sad I missed it. My pride and joy additions from Rice Creek include (but are not limited to)the 'Leonard Messell' magnolia which has reached proportions far greater than any information at the time of purchase led us to believe possible; petasites giganteus/japonicus (yes, Betty warned us about this, but I still love the thug); and my personal crown jewel, my acer japonicum atropurpurea (I'm sure I must have screwed up somewhere in typing that!) which is now, after about 10 years, a gorgeous, spreading 9 x 12' dazzler. It was an 8" pup when I selected it from a group of 30 or so. Best plant purchase I ever made.

There are other wonderful plants that have graced my gardens for lesser periods. What I will miss the most is the inspiration and the idea that anything, even this far north, is possible.

It was disappointing the gardens were closed to the public but we still had a good time. Everything was 50% off and there was still a good selection left to choose from. We all brought home some new treasures.

I didn't make it to tour with you, but I did stop by there yesterday on our way home from our cabin. It was so sad. I did buy several plants at 75% off, but there weren't many plants left.
