Help identifying a tree

Carrera(z5 Chi)May 16, 2005

Hi all... need a little help here.

There is a tall flowering tree outside a church in my neighborhood (Chicago west suburbs). The flowers are gorgeous and I'm dying to find out what kind of tree it is. No one at the church seems to know. The flowers are mostly white with purple and yellow in the throats. They are kind of trumpet shaped and a little orchid-like on the inside.

I will try to take a pic of the flower soon or find one on the web, but if this sounds like a tree you know and love, please let me know. TIA!

Here's a website someone pointed out to me some time ago. Lots of good info there. Maybe you can find it? Sorry I'm not more help than that. I am terrible at remembering names, but I think I know what you are talking about. If I remember correctly, it is a legume, interestingly enough.

Good luck!

It may be a Catalpa tree. I have one in my back yard. It gets very pretty
flowers on like you discribed. It is my Northern orchid tree! They smell
good too. The leaves on the tree are large and kind of heart shaped.
In the Fall they have long hanging brown seed pods. It is a fast growing tree.
some people don't like them because they think they are messy, but I
love the large tree and flowers!

Thanks SO much garden4bees! That's it! When you mentioned the seed pods I knew you had it, and a google search turned up some great info. I liked a picture of a catalpa flower below. Just gorgeous.

Thanks also, cantstopgardening. That's a great site! I live near the Arboretum but never thought to check out their site. Can't wait to visit them soon :-)
